'Tomorrow, then’ by Conrad Vingoe - reveals much and delivers more

The blurred lines between folk and just about everything else continue to distort and obscure, especially when people try to force boxes around music and discover that not much fits into sharp-edged confinement. Accept that, and you’ll pretty much accept Conrad Vingoe as a folk artist – then again his brand of then front cover loAmericana tinged, electrified-acoustic really needs nothing in the way of definition. All that’s really required is to listen.

Expressing sharply portrayed lyrics, attention-grabbing vocals over sparingly convened instrumentation with outstanding hooks, Vingoe adds enough to hold the message yet never swamps the meaning. First off, ‘Tomorrow, then’ reveals a man with a skilled and sensitive touch on guitar, add John Parker on double bass and Martyn Barkeron drums (both ‘there’ to enhance never to distract) to energise the rhythmic muscle, and it’s an album that makes its mark.

Vingoe’s voice has an edge to it that hovers between perceptive questioning and raw acceptance – from the gentle deliberations of ‘Hand on my Heart’ through questions asked in ‘Fail’ and the acceptance of ‘Barrier’, to ‘Hurricane’ and ‘Won’t Be Tied’ filled with quiet simplicity – taken together this song collection reveals much and delivers more.
